Oprah Winfrey is by far one of the most successful talk show hosts of all time and her media empire is soon to expand with the launch of her very own network the Oprah Winfrey Network. After 25 years and being named the Queen of Daytime Talk Shows, Oprah is taking her talk to her own network, OWN. The Oprah Winfrey Network, or what is referred to as OWN, will be launching on January 1st, 2011 and what better way to bring in the new year than with one of TV’s favorite leading ladies, Oprah Winfrey.
Millions of people will be tuning into what was once the Discovery Health, and is now the Oprah Winfrey Network. According to the Wall Street Journal, approximately 85 million homes will be able to access the new network via what was once called the Discovery Health Channel. This switch will not be without complications. The Wall Street Journal states, “The tricky part, especially if the new network proves popular, will be when cable or satellite companies’ existing contracts with Discovery Communications Inc. expire. Discovery and Winfrey’s Harpo Inc. production company each own half of the new network, and the goal is to secure significantly higher monthly fees and advertising revenue than Discovery Health currently receives.”
Most cable providers that are not already a part of the new Oprah movement, are in negotiations to allow the Oprah Winfrey show to be viewed through multiple cable service providers.
The Oprah Winfrey Network is planning 20 original series throughout next year, including some of the best prime-time talk specials and celebrity programs. Unlike other Oprah mobile applications , OWN TV shows will not available on smart phones or online. However, the OWN online site will feature recaps and behind the scenes videos but will not offer streaming of full episodes, as per Oprah.com. It is likely that the Oprah Network will be available in HD, depending on your local cable provider.
