Online Dating To Become Safer In The States

April 22, 2011 by Joe divider image

Lawmakers in several states across the US are trying to pass legislation to help make online dating safer for people online. In Connecticut and Texas bills will be pending later this year to provide users with a greater awareness of the dangers involved, and how to prevent themselves from getting into trouble.

Connecticut’s bill is based upon a similar law past recently in New York. The bill requires that internet dating services provide a safety awareness notice upon registration. It will offer advice such as never revealing your last name, address, email, place of work, phone numbers or identifying information in your online profile. A similar law will be passed soon in both Florida and New Jersey. These laws are being passed due to cases such as the one in Pennsylvania in 2009. A man was jailed for life for the sexual assault of an Idaho woman in 2005. He  was already serving a 21 year sentence for two other sexual assault convictions. Authorities portrayed he man as a smooth talking predator who would regularly use online dating sites to arrange meets, or to find the locations of his victims. Upon meeting, the man would spike the women’s drinks.

Connecticut state Rep. Mae Flexer, a Democrat who authored the bill said: “I’ve heard a lot of stories, not only people who had their physical safety endangered, but also financial safety.” On Sunday, the popular dating site, Match.com announced that it would be implementing the new guidelines, as well as screening its members against the sex offender registry. In 2009, Myspace said that it had successfully eradicated 90,000 sex offenders from its site using this method.

Despite the risks of online dating, a lot of people around the world use it, and remain safe from harm.
